![]() Same issue as above, time was of the essence.Īs a software developer I understand the issues of piracy and the need to make a return on your investment very well, but dongles are a solution that offers dubious benefits and the weighting is all in favour of the software vendor. I had a lot of arguments with the s/ware vendors over these issues but since they wouldn't commit in writing (so I could have them sued for non-performance) to replace their lock regardless of my physical location, I didn't buy their software. Nothing could be down if at all avoidable. We operated in the Southern Ocean and ran data logging systems 24/7. What happens if you need to swap out a major component? Wait for a new activation key? Software locked to a hardware config is no better IMO. We had a licence, the money wasn't an issue, it was the ability to keep working if necessary. My guys used Solidworks without any problems, no dongles. It cost over $60K per day to keep the ship at sea, plus fuel and staffing costs. Software controlled by a dongle left us vulnerable to the thing getting broken (shit happens on ships) and no way to get a replacement. I refuse to buy software that requires a dongle.įor many years I was first a scientific programmer and later manager of a marine R&D group and we spent up to 3 months at sea on a single voyage. ![]()
